Frankfurt and its new low-budget carriers

New low-cost flights and strong growth in the main customer Lufthansa has given Frankfurt Airport a new passenger record last year. Growth was 6.1 percent higher at 64.5 million passengers than it has been since 2011. A new low-cost passenger gate is scheduled to open in 2021 and open the third terminal in 2023.

A year earlier, the MDax Group had recorded a decline in passenger numbers in Frankfurt and reacted to this with a stronger focus on low-cost carriers such as Ryanair. For the first time in 2017, the Irish entered Lufthansa’s home hub, and other low-cost airlines such as WOW and Wizz also included the Hessian city in the program.
